Tip Toe, Iris Grace

Let me lead you on a journey
To games of wondrous complexity
It’s not that hard to understand
If you’re prepared with an open hand
To follow me through my fantasy land
Where magic soars and colors grand
Imagination knows no height
And there, my friend, you’ll find my light.

EXPRESSIVE ARTS THERAPY

The expressive arts – visual art, dance, movement, music, storytelling and more – have long been recognised in many cultures as having transformative and restorative powers. Expressive arts therapy acknowledges and enhances the power of expression by employing creative and expressive arts modalities in a therapeutic setting to facilitate discovery, growth, connection, transformation and healing.

The act of creative expression can open doors to undiscovered and/or unacknowledged parts of ourselves and give form, shape, colour and voice to thoughts, feelings and emotions that may be otherwise difficult to express. It can be a powerful communication tool, allowing us to express ourselves through a wide variety of processes and materials that transcend verbal communication alone.

Creative expression can reconnect us with our deepest selves, beyond that of traumatic or challenging life experiences or circumstances, and allow us to speak our most authentic soul voice. It is this voice that guides us gently through our often complex and overwhelming thoughts, feelings, emotions, experiences and circumstances, and leads us back to a place of balance and ease.

Expressive arts therapy provides a safe environment in which to explore inner worlds, reflect on emotions and experiences, alchemise negative energies, become present and mindful, communicate and express oneself, and find wholeness, healing and peace. It is the process of journeying within and outwardly expressing that is emphasised in expressive arts therapy, rather than the quality of artwork produced. For this reason, neither artistic ability or experience are required to benefit.

INDIVIDUAL THERAPY

Individual expressive arts therapy sessions allow children and adolescents to explore and express themselves through a range of creative modalities, within a safe, nurturing, and supportive environment.

In individual sessions, therapist and client are able to develop an open and trusting relationship, allowing the client to feel more secure in delving deeper into their thoughts, feelings, emotions and experiences and able to express these more authentically and fully. In doing so a process of reflecting, processing, transforming and healing can begin to take place with gentle guidance from the therapist.

Just as powerfully, individual sessions can be a time for experiencing expression, discovery, communication, playfulness and mindfulness.

GROUP THERAPY

Group expressive arts therapy sessions allow children and adolescents with similar life experiences and circumstances to engage with each other in a safe, supportive and inclusive setting, while exploring a range of creative modalities.

Alongside exploration, expression and playfulness through the arts, group sessions offer a valuable opportunity for social interaction, group participation and communication with peers with support, encouragement and guidance from the therapist. Peer interaction in an inclusive creative environment can reduce feelings of isolation and social anxiety, improve social behaviours and communication skills, and promote friendship building and overall positive feelings.

Group sessions run with the school term, please enquire early to secure a space.
